Your Weekly COVID-19 Update
Friday, April 3, 2020
This Week’s Situation Report
April 3: The Ontario government is reducing the list of businesses classified as essential and ordering more workplaces to close. It’s also taking further action to redirect existing resources to focus squarely on the fight against this new virus while allowing for public health units to considerably increase their capacity to stop the spread of COVID-19.
April 1: The Ontario government is launching a new $50 million Ontario Together Fund to help businesses provide innovative solutions or retool their operations in order to manufacture essential medical supplies and equipment.
March 31: The Ontario government has extended the Declaration of Emergency and associated emergency measures, including the closure of non-essential workplaces and restrictions on social gatherings, to at least April 13, 2020. Also announced was the launch of a new dedicated web page with enhanced the public information about the status of COVID-19.
March 28: The Ontario government prohibits gatherings of more than five people and issued an emergency order that retail businesses and individuals in Ontario cannot charge unfair prices for necessary goods. Consumers can report price gougers by filing a complaint at 1-800-889-9768 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, or by filing a report online.
March 27: The Minister of Health orders an inventory survey to determine gaps in the supply and need for Personal Protective Equipment. Please refer to today’s email from the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario about the Ministry of Health PPE survey.
ODA Event Suspension Continues

The suspension and/or cancellation of all ODA in-person events will continue until further notice. The ODA does not plan to resume face-to-face events at least until May 15, 2020 unless circumstances change. This timeline will give ODA committees, staff and component societies who wish to align with the ODA’s timelines appropriate notice to reschedule, cancel or move their meetings to a virtual format. The timeline will be reviewed in early May to determine whether further adjustments will be necessary.
Guidance on Federal Wage Subsidy

In response to the recent communication from the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association, particularly with respect to the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS), we note that many important details have yet to be confirmed and the final program passed by the Parliament of Canada may differ considerably.

Given this uncertainty, in many cases, it may be prudent to hold off on taking steps to recall employees from layoff or restart paying employees until the final details regarding qualification for the CEWS are known.
Free Online CE Opportunities

All ODA recorded webinars, as well as several e-learning programs, are now available at no cost to members. This limited-time promotion is available now through May 31, 2020. Check out the Recorded Webinars and E-Learning modules in the Continuing Education section of the member website.
