ODA President’s Message to Members
Dr. Kim Hansen wants all dentists to know that during these uncertain times, we are all in this together. View his video message to members here.
ODA Identifying PPE Gaps in Province
The ODA continues to raise the issue of securing adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) for dental offices with the Ministry of Health (MOH), including those treating emergency dental cases, to help keep patients out of hospital emergency rooms. The ODA is identifying gaps in both PPE supplies and geographical barriers based on the location of emergency dental clinics, to bolster our advocacy efforts with the MOH.
Canada’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan: Clarifying CERB Eligibility and Other Updates
There are questions about the eligibility of members delivering emergency dental care for the Federal government’s COVID-19 financial assistance programs, such as the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB). Currently, a dentist would not qualify for the CERB unless they have 14 days without any income. However, today Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that more flexible rules for claiming the CERB are on their way, including for individuals who make less than $1,000 a month due to reduced work hours. The Prime Minister also announced that in the coming days there will be more help for businesses having trouble paying commercial rent. The ODA is working with the Canadian Dental Association to ensure dentists are fully supported by Canada’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan.

Rapid COVID-19 Tests in Dental Offices?
We are hearing from members about the desire to access rapid-results COVID-19 tests for dental offices. Suggestions include dentists not only administering the test to asymptomatic patients prior to delivering dental treatment, but also adding dentists to the list of health-care professionals that can administer general testing for the public. While the development of rapid-results tests is in early stages and may raise scope-of-practice issues, the ODA is investigating these tests now so we can be prepared for their possible applications when dental offices reopen. Premier Doug Ford has expressed frustration at the number of daily COVID-19 tests currently being done, and the Ministry of Health is actively exploring the potential role of approved and experimental rapid tests.
Insurance Coverage for Pandemic Closures
The ODA has heard questions from dentists about whether the current COVID-19 pandemic event would make them eligible to have claims covered under general business interruption insurance coverage. Members have also requested our assistance in advocating on this issue. The ODA is working with insurance and legal experts to see how we can best help our members.
In the meantime, CDSPI President Ed Dermit appeared in a CDA OASIS Discussion on April 9 to talk about pandemic insurance coverage. CDSPI has added a helpful Frequently Asked Questions guide on its TripleGuardTM pandemic coverage to its website.
Ontario Dentist Mailed to Your Home
For our April issue of Ontario Dentist, we have decided to send printed copies to members’ home addresses (if you have provided those to us), knowing that members’ office hours are disrupted during the pandemic. If we do not already have your home address on file, it was mailed to your office. We hope to resume our normal distribution once this pandemic is over. Enjoy the issue!
In our member communication from April 9, the phone number provided for the Moneris Support Centre was incorrect. The correct number is 1-866-319-7450.
Moneris is working with members to assist with their changing business needs and requirements to help them through the COVID-19 crisis. Contact the Moneris Support Centre at 1-866-319-7450 – have your Moneris merchant number ready so the support team can easily access your account information.
